Choosing your water
Ha Long vs Lan Ha vs Bai Tu Long Bay
Same spectacular karsts, very different crowd levels.
The three bays compared
| Bay | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Ha Long Bay | The famous, central, busiest bay | First-timers wanting the classic name |
| Lan Ha Bay | Southern, near Cat Ba, quieter beaches | Scenery with fewer boats and swimming |
| Bai Tu Long Bay | Northeastern, remote and peaceful | Quiet water and a slower pace |
| Combined routes | Cruises linking more than one bay | Variety across a longer cruise |
One karst landscape, three bays
The famous limestone-island scenery doesn't stop at the edge of Ha Long Bay proper — it continues into the neighbouring Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long bays, which share the same dramatic karsts and emerald water. The main difference between them isn't the scenery but the crowds, so choosing your bay is really choosing how busy you want your experience to be.
Central Ha Long Bay
The central bay is the most famous and the busiest, with the highest concentration of boats and the best-known sights. It's the classic choice for first-timers who want to say they've cruised Ha Long Bay itself, and it delivers the iconic scenery. The trade-off is the traffic — at peak times the popular anchorages and caves can feel crowded with other vessels.
Lan Ha Bay
To the south, near Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay offers the same stunning karsts with noticeably fewer boats, plus more beaches and swimming spots. It's become a favourite for cruises seeking to avoid the central crowds while keeping all the scenery, and for many visitors it hits the sweet spot of spectacular views with a calmer, more relaxed feel on the water.
Bai Tu Long Bay
To the northeast lies Bai Tu Long Bay, the quietest and most remote of the three, where cruises encounter far fewer other boats and a slower, more peaceful atmosphere. For travellers who prize serenity and want the karst scenery largely to themselves, Bai Tu Long is the standout choice — the same wonder, with the crowds left behind.
Picking your bay
If the famous name matters most and you don't mind company, central Ha Long Bay delivers. If you want the scenery with more calm and some beaches, Lan Ha is ideal. And if peace and quiet are your priority, Bai Tu Long is unbeatable. Since the scenery is superb across all three, choosing on crowd levels — via the cruise that visits your preferred bay — is the smart approach.
